Zimbabwe has been in the midst of a serious political and economic crisis, which has exacted a huge humanitarian toll on its population.

The country is run by president Robert Mugabe and a small coterie of colleagues from the ruling ZANU PF party who have manipulated successive presidential elections through large scale violence and intimidation to maintain their stranglehold on power. While the ruling political elite live a life of privilege and excess, the vast majority of Zimbabweans are subject to a slow genocide through mass starvation, disease and impoverishment.

At present there is serious cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe, which has caused 2200 deaths and affected 42 000 people exacerbated by the breakdown of health and medical services. Additionally, since the beginning of November 2008, civil society and political activists have been subjected to a campaign of abductions, torture and other sinister forms of intimidation.

While many are suspected to have been murdered, others have been charged with attempting to overthrow the government through “armed rebellion” for speaking out against the abuses of the regime.

The Save Zimbabwe Now initiative was launched in January 2009 with a relay fast as the first campaign to mobilise regional public awareness and build pressure on SADC governments to influence the Zimbabwean state to restore dignity, human and democratic rights to its people.

Various actions will continue to take place including letter writing campaigns, public meetings and rallies throughout Southern Africa.
